The Jersey Penguins are pleased to introduce our head coaches.  We have assembled a top notch, highly energetic, and experienced team of coaches committed to the development of your child and to a great season.  Head coaches for nearly all our teams are independent (non-parent).

18AA, Pat Verney. A native of Hudson County, Coach Verney has spent much of the last 20 years involved in New Jersey hockey.  He played at Hudson Catholic where he finished his career fifth all-time in the state with 301 points.  He was named the Star Ledger Coach of the Year in 2007 as the Head Coach of Hillsborough High School and he received the Star Ledger Coach of the Year in 2009 as the Head Coach of Montclair High School.  He was the fourth youngest coach in New Jersey High School history to amass 100 wins and has recorded three division championships.   

16AA, Barry Lupovich.  Coach Lupovich is an educator in a local private school.  A native of Montreal he has 35+ years of coaching experience.  His coaching resume includes assistant coach at the University of Denver, Minnesota HS hockey, Midget Major (Toronto) and New England Prep.  He has coached youth hockey locally for a decade and is the Penguins Coaching Director.  He has extensive experience developing players of this age.

16AA/A, Eric Greene.   Coach Greene attended the Trinity-Pawling School after which he played in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League where he accrued several honors including League All Star.  He played Division III hockey with the Plattsburgh State Cardinals from 2006-2009.  He was Captain of the team, competed for the NCAA D3 Championship in 2008, and graduated Cum Laude in 2009.  In college, he was recognized with several academic and humanitarian awards including National Honors from the Downs Syndrome Association for his work with children with this condition.  Over the past six seasons he has coached primarily at the Tier I level locally and won AYHL Championships twice.  

Bantam AA, Barry Lupovich.  Coach Lupovich is an educator in a local private school.  A native of Montreal he has 35+ years of coaching experience.  His coaching resume includes assistant coach at the University of Denver, Minnesota HS hockey, Midget Major (Toronto) and New England Prep.  He has coached youth hockey locally for a decade and is the Penguins Coaching Director.  He has extensive experience developing players of this age.

Bantam A, Tom Rauter.  Coach Rauter has coached at the Penguins for five years taking several of our Bantam and Midget teams to the NJYHL playoffs.  He completed his 20th year as a member of the Chatham High School Varsity coaching staff in 2015 and was the assistant coach on the CHS 2011 and 2013 State Championship teams.  He played for Chatham High School and the Penn State Nittany Lions.  His son is playing D1 hockey at Cornell University.   

PeeWee AA, Dan Spautz.  Coach Spautz was an Assistant Coach on the 2013 State Champion Chatham HS Varsity Ice Hockey Team and Head Coach of the Chatham HS JV Team.  He is a Certified Physical Education teacher and is a long time head coach across multiple youth sports.  He played hockey locally for Morristown HS.

PeeWee A, Garth Behrje.  Coach Garth begins his 10th consecutive year coaching youth ice hockey in NJ.  He has coached and developed youth hockey players at all levels from learn to skate programs through Bantams.  His coaching style fosters a fully engaged, high energy, and rewarding culture for young athletes.  His practices are intense and focus on conditioning, puck control, skill development, game situations, as well as team strategy.  He played youth in Michigan and began hockey at Notre Dame which was cut short by injury. 

Squirt 1, Matt Setola.  Coach Matt is going into his sixth season with the Penguins.  He specializes in our youth excelling with players aged Mite through PeeWee.  He instructs learn to skate, skills and drills, as well as mite clinics at Rock Ice.  He played Varsity hockey at the Morristown-Beard School and has coached Mite through PeeWee in his time with the Penguins and Spring Select Teams. 

Squirt 2, Bill Rieth.  Coach Bill played hockey for the past two decades and played his youth hockey in NJ.  He was an assistant coach last season with the Bridgewater Bears.  Coach Bill focuses on player development, teamwork, and fun. His philosophy is the period from 9-12 years old are the critical years of skill development.  His practices are high tempo, fast moving, and skills focused.
