The Penguins will skate one 16AA and one 16AA/A team in the NJYHL for the 2018-19 season out of Rock Ice in Dunellen.
Our U16 teams have independent (non-parent) coaches, practice times that respect your players academics, and more time on the ice.
Our goal at U16 is to have competitive teams where players can attain their goals. Specifically, we want to enable them to excel in their National Bound years, 16AA and 18AA, and to fulfill their HS hockey objectives. We have a longer term view of your player's U16 development to accomplish both goals. We want good players and we want to offer them a home through their HS years.
We will have our U16 teams on the ice during the Spring. They will take late June and July off and then get back on the ice in August. The pre-season schedule will respect their Spring sport calendars. They will play a short season Midget schedule in the NJYHL.
Practices will be at Rock Ice in Dunellen with start times no later than 8:45p. All ice is already under contract at the rink. It is likely the U16A team will practice after school (4:30p). Of course, practices are full ice on a regulation sheet.
Practice times will be confirmed before we ask your player to try out.
Our players have hockey as a primary sport, a high level of commitment on and off the ice to getting better, and foster a supportive locker room environment - good players and good families.

We anticipate a highly competitive 16AA team this season. In addition to focusing on this season, this team will be developed to be a highly competitive 18AA team next year, as first year U18 players.
Our coach for the 16AA team is Alex Yavtuhovich. Coach Alex has over 15 years youth coaching experience almost exclusively at this age group. His 16AA and 18AA teams have won League and District Championships and he has taken a local 16AA to USA Hockey Nationals as Head Coach. His biography is below.
We expect our 16AA/A team to be comprised of mostly first year players and HS freshmen and sophomores. They will be developed to be a top 16AA team the following season and to achieve their HS hockey goals as underclassmen on their high school teams. We will consider well qualified 2004 birth years who will be Freshman for this team.
Our coach for the 16AA/A is Matt Setola. Coach Matt's biography is below.
Following tryouts the teams will get on the ice the first week of May. They will skate weekly on alternating nights through mid-June. The final week of Spring skates will have two practices and then a tournament, if players' schedules permit, or a weekend of games.
The teams will take the ice again in the second week of August for clinics and practices. We will have weekend events (extra practice or game) beginning by August 25. Thereafter, we begin League games.
The teams will have at least 15 hours on the ice together prior to the start of the season. All ice slots are already under contract at the rink.
Everything is included in tuition.
